Throughout the world, construction processes and practices are under scrutiny. Changing markets, new technology and rising client expectations are stimulating radical reviews of how the industry can be re-engineered to enhance its performance. A concise development of better working practices in the design and construction industry is needed to define the appropriate value derived from the construction industry so that
'...the value jointly created is maximised and the resulting rewards equitably distributed between all stakeholders.'
A Global Agenda formed from an international survey questionnaire and a series of international workshops.
The outcome of the Global agenda is summarised in an "infinity" diagram, which reflects the need for continuous and progressive improvement in 7 key areas for a more valued industry. Overall, these elements make up a vision of how construction can, and should, move coherently together:
- Holistic idea of construction
- Shared vision amongst stakeholders
- Balance of markets and social capital
- Dynamic decisions and information
- Evolving knowledge and attitudes
- Awareness of systemic contribution
- Promotion of full value delivered to society
This CIB Priority Theme aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to the many initiatives and programmes around the World that are seeking to change and improve the performance of the construction industry. It is being undertaken by the University of Salford's 6* rated Research Institute for the Built and Human Environment (the highest ranked in the UK), on behalf of the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB), the leading international network for innovation in construction.
